Antiques… What are they?

Old Wood Secretary

What is an antique?  In it’s truest defintion an antique is an object of at least 100 years.  Something desired for it’s beauty, quality or rarity.  Less than 100, it’s just a collectible.  Well according to my family, I’m not sure I qualify as a collectible, for surely they don’t want another, one is more than enough.  But, I do know that they do consider me, at times, an antique.  I do love to be surrounded by lovely old things and while I might agree that I have great qualities and of course I’m rare, there is after all only one of me! Antique… not quite.

I do own an Antique shop, although I do use that term loosely.  I think we all do.  The places that have 100% antiques are called Museums!  While I have a few beautiful pieces that are well over a hundred years old, the vast majority of my treasures are wanna be’s or what are commonly known as collectibles. I look at all these lovely things and hope that one day, through love and preservation, they too will be antiques.
